OK, I thought I would do something different and feature one of my favourite artists Jack Johnson and the meaning of his song “Hope” which is also one of my favourite songs.
Keep in mind that this is my interpretation of the song lyrics Hope and although he might share the same view I haven’t yet had a chance to discuss it with him.
I have been a huge fan of Jack Johnson since his early surfing videos and I continue to watch and enjoy him and his music as he continues to evolve, creating great melodies with deep meaning lyrics.
Before I give my interpretation of the song “Hope” let me first present you here with the lyrics themselves.
Out of focus…But in confusion
The frames are suddenly burnt
And in the end of a roll of illusion
A ghost waiting its turn
Now I can see right through
It’s a warning that nobody heard
It will teach you to love what you’re afraid of
After it takes away all that you learn to love
But you don’t always
Have to hold your head higher than your heart
You better hope you’re not alone (repeats 6 times)
Your echo comes back out of tune
Now you can quite get used to it
Reverb is just a room
The problem is that there’s no truth to it
It’s fading way too soon
The shadow is on the move
And maybe you should be moving too
Before it takes away all that you learned to love
It will defeat you and then teach you to get back up
Because you don’t always
Have to hold your head higher than your heart
You better hope you’re not alone (repeats 7 times)
Better hope
Better hope you’re not alone
Hope
To me this song represents your ego that often gets in the way of what you truly love or are passionate about in life. Your ego is like a “shadow” that follows you everywhere you go. It is an “illusion” that brings you “out of focus” from your true self and thus causes “confusion”.
Your ego is like a “ghost” because you don’t see it and often are unaware of it. It separates you from love and feeds off your fear – thus “teaching you to love what you are afraid of”. You often become best friends with your ego – it’s like an “echo, “out of tune” (meaning not in tune with your own higher truth) that you become familiar with. You feel that you need to keep up to your ego (the mind’s self inflated view of yourself) or else you will lose what you have earned or gained which is your false distorted view of what you love.
Your ego gives you the sense that you are indestructible – teaching “you to get back up”. When you follow the voice of the ego, “it will defeat you”.
Your ego needs to be kept in check because if it takes control of you, you become full of pride and accomplishment losing sight of the big picture which is about doing things that bring you joy and happiness. When you gloat in your gory and success, it becomes expected of you to always be successful.
So what happens when you fail? We all fail at one time or another because failure is part of the learning process. By holding your head higher than your heart – your pride and ego become more important than your true heart felt passion .You don’t do it for love of the game – so to speak.
Often you neglect others – especially those who love and care about you because you get caught up in who you are; your egocentric view of life. The world revolves only around you. When you become so self- absorbed that you forget about others, others forget about your true self. Then, you’re left only with your ego. So, “you better hope you’re not alone” because eventually the ego will let you down.
Message of the song. Do things from the heart and practice humility.
“You don’t always have to hold your head higher than your heart”. Humility is a wonderful thing because you learn the true meaning of life and essence of love without having to be noticed or validating the opinions of others. Humility destroys the ego.

It’s really powerful the way you brought together such a great song and the message of pursing your dreams. The ego can mean a lot of things to a lot of different people. Some people talk about strengthening it, but I generally regard it as a hindrance.
Hope, faith and belief are all needed to be able to think of failure as a sign of progress and overcome the many traps of the mind (ego) that can keep us from change and our big purpose. I liked studying the lyrics and listening to the song.
Jack Johnson is amazing. “Imagine” by Lennon is one of my favorite songs, but Jack’s version is a song I listen to a lot right now. It goes well with “Hope,”
David,
Thanks for the insights. I like John Lennon as well – some amazing lyrics. Perhaps we should feature some more songs and artists with deep meaningful lyrics.
Hi Jai,
Thanks for the insightful words, they are a good reminder for one to keep your ego in check.
I like your interpretation of this song. I like music because it requires we listen which is a form of humility.
Humitlity, although a strong attribute, won’t in and of itself keep your ego in check, but it is surely a positive influence.
I believe as David said that hope, faith and belief are all needed. But to go one step further I believe we must stay in touch with our spirtual life, which is how I interpret Davids statement (Hope thats right). This helps us to recoginize that the ego gets out of check and we need to balance our life with a little spirtual check up.
For me I refer back to meditation but everyone has a different slant on were their faith lies and there is were they gain spirtual balance.
Very provoking post and well written. Thanks!
I agree with you Scott – being it touch with your spiritual life will help keep the ego in check. Spiritual practice is a must and we all have our methods but the question is, How does a spiritual practice dissolve the ego completely – and how can we be made consciously aware of this to keep it in check at all times? The person that comes to mind is Eckhart Tolle..?
Great insight and comments. I agree with you all and think the best way to consciously keep the ego in check is through spiritual practice whether it be prayer, contemplation or meditation. In addition one needs to remember to continually appreciate, surrender (knowing there is a greater force at work than you) and let go of any resistance…here is my post on spiritual empowerment
