The One Minute Formula for Success

Today I have a very short and simple formula that you can apply immediately and it will have positive affects on your relationships, business, career, personal & spiritual growth and health. I wrote this article several weeks ago and was waiting for the right time to post it. I just recently read the article Stillness is a Powerful Action from my friend Leo over at Zen Habits and it affirmed to me that I should publish this as the first article of the week.

Even my spiritual teachers Eckhart Tolle and Swami Veda (Yoga & Meditation Guru) have recommended this formula for spiritual growth. The One Minute Formula for Success

Take one minute of pure awareness several times throughout the day by dropping whatever you are doing and come into stillness.

First you need to relax – so start off by taking a nice deep breath to release any physical tension. Now feel the space in which your body is occupying – I like to feel the sensation of my hands. Next begin to feel the natural flow of your breath. You should learn to breathe deeply and diaphragmatically – inhale feel you belly rising, exhale feel your belly falling.

Following this process for one minute this will allow you to become completely awake, aware and alert. If you do this properly you will feel a sense of silence among the noise and a sense of stillness among the commotion. You will feel completely at ease and tension free. You will become more peaceful and calm allowing you to really observe and enjoy your surroundings

This can literally be done anywhere, anytime, anyplace. The key and secret is to practice this one minute of stillness often throughout the day because what you continually practice becomes a habit. And that is exactly what we want to do, create a habit of awareness.

The best times to practice this one minute of stillness is:

First thing in the morning when you get out of bed, before you do anything.

Before and/or after eating meals

Before and/or after driving your car

While you are in line waiting for something (ex: the bus, the bank, groceries)

At night before you go to bed.

You can literally do this practice sitting, laying or standing and, with the eyes closed or open. There are really no criteria of how to practice this one minute of stillness. I like to practice this while sitting in my car before I’m about to drive – it allows me to drive in a focused and relaxed state. When I have finished driving and have parked the car I also like to practice stillness as it prepares me for becoming more aware and present for what I’m about to do next. I will also practice this often when I am outdoors just standing in the open fresh air. Other times I will practice this before I eat my meals either at home or at a restaurant. Other times at home I will just lie on the floor to take a minute of stillness break.

As strange as this practice may seem to some of you it actually really works because when you are more focused and present you are more successful, at anything you do. So the question is now, how will you implement this wonderful formula in your daily activities to bring you success in all areas of your life?

Go ahead, give it a try now. By practicing this a few times a day, you create more awareness and let go of resistance. You learn to let go of your ego and make clear correct choices in that pure awareness. You learn to appreciate the truth and beauty unfolding in each in every moment, and that my friends is the way to ultimate success and happiness.

    I have practiced this method many times but there are certain times that I go unsuccessful. I have a problem of calming my mind, its ripples are dominating my concentration. I hope I will find a way to counter this.

    @ walter – keep meditating…whatever the mind continues to do will become a habit…

    Jai – I just discovered your site and have been cruising round it. I love how it spans the full breadth of holistic living.
    Walter – I’d just like to add that meditation is different every time you practice it. Sometimes we judge something we do ‘unsuccessful’ because it didn’t bring the same results as last time. But the mind never stays the same. One day meditation is easy, the next the mind its virtually untameable – it may be something that we’ve eaten, or it may be due to something happening in our lives. That’s OK, don’t beat yourself up. Accept your present experience – it’s one of the hardest lessons to learn in life. But as Jai says, keep meditation, because practice really does make perfect.

    @ Helen..Thank you for this wonderful comment… These experiences happen often in meditation so it;s important to have this acceptance and never condemn yourself, instead try introspection – having an internal dialogue with yourself for a few minutes before meditation.
