Does anyone really know the true purpose and values of mushrooms? When I think of mushrooms words like hallucinogen, Magic, Oyster, Morel and Portabella come to mind. Yes, all the ones you can eat for pleasure. However, after seeing Paul speak on numerous occasions, I have come to realize the new potentials and possibilities that mushrooms have… This video gives you a clear intention of Paul’s vision on how the success of mushrooms can change the world. Note; the hat the Paul is wearing in this video is made out of a mushroom – made of 100% Fungi.

Paul Stamets to some is known as the mushroom man however his exact title is a mycologist. What exactly is a mycologist? Mycologist is someone who studies the branch of biology concerned with the study of fungi. This includes their genetic and biochemical properties, their taxonomy, and their use to humans as a source for medicinals and entheogens. He has been a devoted mycologist for over 30 years. In this time he has been successful in discovering four new species of mushrooms, and pioneered numerous techniques in the field of edible and medicinal mushroom cultivation. This man is truly amazing when it comes to the science and innovation of mushrooms.

Paul is passionate about saving the world….he believes that his can be done through mushroom cultivation. His mission is to preserve, protect, and clone as many ancestral strains of mushrooms as possible from pristine woodlands. In doing so, he believes we could save many species of plants and animals from being extinct. Paul states, “The time to act is now. Waiting for science and society to wake up to the importance of these ancient Old Growth fungi is perilously slow and narrow in vision. The meager attempts thus far may be too little, too late. Unless we collectively pool our resources, the mushroom genome will become increasingly threatened, and therefore, our very existence may be at stake. The loss of these keystone organisms should be an ecological call-to-arms for all concerned about our children’s future and the future of this planet.”

Paul continues to illustrate through scientific research that mushrooms have medicinal and healing properties. He says, “The rainforests of the Pacific Northwest may harbor mushroom species with profound medicinal properties. At the current rates of extinctions, this last refuge of the mushroom genome should be at the top of the list of priorities for mycologists, environmentalists and government. If I can help advance this knowledge, I will have done my part to protect life on this planet. And yet, if it were not for our customer’s contributions, with our limited finances, this goal could not be achieved.”

Here are a few points that Paul makes out about the Success of Mushrooms aka Fungi…

1. Fungi are capable of converting pollution to food, it fixes soils and will result in a mixed community of life, and therefore it can be responsible for habitat restoration.

2. Fungi has also been proven to be extremely effective against viruses, in fact Paul suggests that saving Old Growth forests, which is critical for these Fungi, should be a matter of National Defence.

3. Fungi can kill or repel termites from eating houses, and they, on the other hand can be used to attract insects to certain other areas.

4. Fungi can produce ethanol by breaking down cellulose which might well be a better way of producing an alternative fuel, rather than using scarce food.

There are all these potentials and possibilities for fungi, yet most of us have never heard of their amazing abilities. Why is that? How can such a relatively simple and inexpensive solution be over looked? Perhaps it has something to do with the way big corporations and businesses make big bucks. Nevertheless, Paul Stamets through his years of work and dedication has proven that mushrooms can change the world and play a successful role in healing our planet. Mushroom success is a real possbility

Paul has written several books on mushroom cultivation, use and identification; his books Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms and The Mushroom Cultivator (coauthor) have long been hailed as the definitive texts of mushroom cultivation. Other works by Paul Stamets include Psilocybin Mushrooms of the World, MycoMedicinals®: an Informational Treatise on Mushrooms, and his newest book Mycelium Running: How Mushrooms Can Help Save The World.
